Every person in every office in every city around the world has a role to play. But there are certain people in those offices who help the company to run smoothly, and without whom, the same seamless operation could not be guaranteed.

At BCI Minerals, that person is Kristy Parsons who joined the business in 2021 as the Executive Assistant to the Managing Director and Office Manager.

What sets Kristy apart is her commitment to excellence and her ability to seamlessly handle a never-ending list of responsibilities. She is a meticulous planner who ensures the smooth flow of day-to-day operations at BCI, all with a smile on her face and a patience that never seems to waiver.

Kristy is truly the glue that holds BCI together, and it is an honour to tell you more about her.

Question: What does your role at BCI involve?

Answer: I play a dual role in trying to ensure a well-oiled workplace. As the Executive Assistant, I assist various teams, manage schedules, and support the Managing Director. Simultaneously, as the Office Manager, I oversee day-to-day operations, manage facilities, and implement policies for a smooth working environment.

Q: What do you like about your job at BCI?

A: The heart of BCI lies in its phenomenal team and fantastic culture. Seeing everyone passionately contributing to a successful project, fuelled by belief and enthusiasm, creates an environment that I genuinely love being a part of. I really enjoy putting together work events to foster team bonding and socialising, which helps to contribute to that positive workplace culture.

Q: What’s something interesting about you?

A: I was born in Brazil, but my family roots are in Trinidad. Thanks to my dad's job in oil and gas, we moved around quite a bit. We also lived in Singapore, Miami, Houston, Egypt, Brunei, and Malaysia to name a few. My favourite place to live besides Australia was Brunei, as it was like living in a rainforest. Living in different places taught me to handle all sorts of situations and people, it's like a crash course in life. Traveling has been a significant part of shaping who I am today, adding a diverse flavour to my perspective and a knack for adapting to various environments.

Q: What is a time in your life when you’ve been proud of yourself?

A: Undoubtedly, one of my most cherished and proudest moments was navigating the challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey of raising my three kids. Witnessing them embark on their individual paths and evolve into unique individuals has been a source of immense pride. Parenthood is an ongoing journey, and seeing my kids create their path brings a profound sense of fulfillment and pride in the role I play as a parent.

Q: What do you do with your weekends / spare time?

A: Weekends are spent with family and friends. Whether I'm hanging with my three adult kids, chasing after my toddler nephews, or playing with our rescue dog, every weekend brings a new adventure.

Q: Tell us more about your dog and how she has changed your life?

A: Lola entered our world unexpectedly from the Shenton Park Dog Refuge. I was initially resistant to the idea of adding a dog to our already busy household, but Lola quickly became an indispensable member of our family. She taught us the value of slowing down, appreciating simple pleasures, and finding solace in her calming presence, which has been a lesson in mindfulness and mental well-being we didn't know we needed. Lola's gentle demeanour and unwavering loyalty have transformed our lives, proving that sometimes the things we resist most are the ones that bring us the greatest joy and fulfillment.

Q: What was your highlight of 2023 at BCI?

A: The standout moment of 2023 was the recognition received from both colleagues and the leadership team. As an Executive Assistant, operating behind the scenes is the norm, making this acknowledgment particularly special. The realisation that my contributions were not only noticed but also celebrated by those I work alongside was both professionally affirming and personally gratifying.

“Salt of the Earth” is a fortnightly series where we get to know our dedicated team members.
