While we believe that the team at BCI Minerals comes to work because they love their jobs and their colleagues, we also know that needing to put food on the table and a roof over their heads plays a big part too.

There are few departments more important for the latter than payroll, and no one more integral to that department than Adele Spiller.

As Payroll Lead, Adelle oversaw the implementation of a new payroll system at BCI back in 2021, and she now manages the payroll function to ensure it is efficient, compliant, and delivered on time.

Just as every gear must work in harmony for a wheel to turn smoothly, Adele's diligent work in managing payroll ensures that the entire team can thrive together.

After all, in the grand mechanism of BCI, each member's contribution is crucial, and Adele ensures that they all win as one cohesive team.

Question: What does your role at BCI involve?

Answer: I manage onboarding and offboarding, maintain employee payroll records, set up pay codes to meet business needs, manage employee entitlements and accruals, PAYG, payroll tax, super fund compliance, salary sacrificing arrangements, STP2, end of financial year processing, adhoc foreign currency payments, and monthly reporting – to name a few. This includes dealing with the Australian Taxation Office, Australian Super, Fair Works Commission, Workers Comp Insurance and State Revenue departments across all States and independent auditors. I also work closely with the People and Culture team on various tasks and projects, continuously looking at ways to improve our processes.

Q: What do you like about your job at BCI?

A: BCI is environmentally sound - I love that I work for a company that is creating an environmentally conscious and sustainable project.

Q: Tell us about your past life before becoming a payroll specialist?

A: I have always loved animals and I wanted to learn more about them, so I became a qualified Vet Nurse. I remember one of the first surgeries I assisted with was on a gorgeous golden labrador. He had an obstruction in his abdomen and the vet removed a fully intact corn on the cob from his gut. I started working with a dog behaviourist shortly after I qualified which led to me starting my own dog training business. Over five years, I trained about five thousand dogs and of course, every dog has a person, so I also trained a lot of people too.

Q: Sounds like you love dogs! Can you share with us some of Noah's adventures and the experiences you both enjoy together?

A: Together with Noah, we go to lunches with friends, paddle boardings, and camping off-road. Camping in particular is everything I love rolled up into one, and I always enjoy getting back to the basics and learning new skills such as not getting my car bogged, reversing my camper trailer into a tiny space, building a fire, catching fresh fish, and the list goes on. The simple things in life give me the greatest reward - being outside, surrounded by the ocean, the peace and quiet, and the big laughs with friends. I think we are all so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world.

Q: What is your professional highlight of 2023?

A: Successfully managing the payroll function and seeing the company grow and achieve more and more each year.
